Frequently Asked Questions

What can we expect in the house?

The house has most standard kitchen items you’ll need to cook meals, including a microwave, kettle, cafetiere/coffee mokka. It has salt, pepper, olive oil, cling film and tin foil. You will need to bring all other food and condiments. We provide sufficient toilet roll to help you settle in for a day or two but further supplies will be needed for longer stays. Bin liners, washing up liquid, hand soap are provided but not shampoo/shower gels as these are very much a personal preference.  We also provide some cleaning supplies and firelighters.

Do you allow smoking?

Smoking and vaping are not permitted in the house.

Is linen provided?

All linens, towels and tea towels are provided. Beds will be made up ready for your arrival.

Do you provide a hair dryer?

Yes, a small hair dryer is provided.

Do you supply a cot?

Yes there is a travel cot suitable for children up to 24 months plus some bedding available.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, you can bring your dog. We allow up to two dogs and a tariff of 20EUR per stay applies. This tariff covers the cost of thoroughly cleaning the house after every visit to ensure that it is spotlessly clean for the next guests.

The outside area is not secure and my neighbour has cats.

What is the arrival time and do we need to meet someone at the property?

No, you do not need to meet anyone when you arrive. You can arrive any time after 3.00 pm. Keys are held in a lock box. You will be given the security number and house instructions on payment of your final balance.

What time do we need to leave?

Please leave no later than 11 am on your departure date. To ensure a smooth and efficient changeover we need to start our cleaning work straight away and our housekeepers will arrive at 11 am promptly.

Can I extend the check in-check out times?

During peak times this is not possible as we need the time to prepare the house. During quieter months it may be possible to extend the check in/check out times by up to 1 hour free of charge. Any extensions beyond this are charged at 10EUR per hour.

Is the house accessible for people with disabilities or limited mobility?

The cottage is an old building with changes in level. The stairs are narrow and steep. Please address any specific enquiries prior to booking.

Where is the nearest restaurant/bar serving food?

The bar/restaurant in Fatima (3 km) is the closest. There are also 3 or 4 good bars/restaurants in Castril (5km).

Where are your nearest supermarkets, shops, bakeries etc

The nearest shops and supermarkets are in Castril. Larger supermarkets can be found in Huescar, Baza and Pozo Alcon

Market day in Castril is a Friday.

What about public transport?

There is no bus service so a car is essential.

Transfer times from major airports are:

Granada – 1 hour 40 mins (Easyjet from London Gatwick and Manchester)

Almeria – 2 hours

Murcia – 2 hrs 10 mins.

Malaga – 2 hrs 50 mins

Is there air conditioning?

No but the house was designed before the days of air conditioning and its thick stone walls keep it cool in summer. There are some electric fans available although you are unlikely to need them.

Is the cottage heated?

The house has solid stone walls and is not centrally heated.  In keeping with traditional Spanish country homes, it is heated via a wood burning stove and gas heaters. Instructions on how to use these can be found in the house. Firewood is supplied and included in your booking fee.

How about road access and parking?

The house is at the end of a 1 km unsurfaced track. It can get rutted and the lower section gets steeper but it is always passable in a normal tourist car, you just need to take care. It is possible to park at the neighbouring farm building and walk the last section if you prefer. There’s parking for 2 cars at the property.

Will my mobile phone work in the cottage?

It is unlikely, although some visitors have reported a signal on the rear terrace.

What about WiFi, 3G, TV?

As a matter of deliberate policy there is no television or internet in the cottage.  WiFi is difficult due to the remote location and we prefer the opportunity to return, albeit briefly, to a simpler life without the distractions of electronic communication. 3G and mobile signal are available if you walk up the track.

Can I walk into the village?

Yes, it is a 40 minute walk through the olive groves into Castril.

Where is the nearest place to swim?

A 5 minute walk down the track to the lake! Alternatively, there is great municipal outdoor pool open from late June to early September in Castril.
